Teenage Phenom Submits BJJ Brown Belt!
Enrico Cocco (currently 19 years old) has been ripping through ADVANCED ADULT divisions across the country! At age thirteen, Enrico began training at FFA. After only two years, at fifteen years old, he was deemed by the Avellans ready for not just advanced level competition - but in the adult division! In a very controversial move, the Avellans took Enrico to the North American Grappling Championships (NAGC), the largest submission grappling tournament in the world, and put him in the Men's Advanced Division. It was in this tournament that Enrico, at the time only sixteen years old, faced off versus BJJ brown belt and Judo black belt Cesar Santos. Cesar Santos was no joke! Sporting a black belt in Judo and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Gracie Barra, he was a serious threat! He was an accomplished competitor - competing and placing in many absolute advanced tournaments... even having competed against BOTH head instructors Marcos and David Avellan! This guy is as tough as they come! Before their match, Marcos whispered some advice into Enrico's ear. Having competed against Santos himself and having coached his brother David against him, Marcos had a good insight into Enrico's opponent. Marcos told Enrico the following:
Enrico heard the advice, nodded his head, and the young boy stepped on the mat in front of over 1000 spectators. At the start of the match, the referee asked if this is the kids division - confused by Enrico's appearance. Enrico's told him confidently "NO SIR, THIS IS THE MEN'S ADVANCED." The ref said ok and started the match! Both grapplers move around a bit, then Enrico makes his move and shoots in for Cesar's legs with a very fast takedown! But Cesar counters and tries to jump around Enrico's back! Enrico reacts with lightning speed and finishes his takedown, ending up on top. Matching Enrico's speed, Cesar attempts an armlock from the bottom! Enrico counters and drops back for a leg lock! The crowd goes wild! Cesar tries to counter, rolls over, then "POP!" A huge pop is heard literally from the stands! Enrico popped Santos' knee and forced him to tap! This is by far the biggest upset of the tourney - which had over 1,000 competitors! Immediately people begin to ask,
but most importantly...
Still breathing hard and excited from the victory, Enrico replied to the curious spectators,
Someone then lifted up his shirt sleeve and had a surprised look - Enrico was still a young kid and was not muscularly defined. Enrico noticed this and instantly told him,
This victory made news around the world! Video of the match was picked up on the internet and shown in martial arts discussion forums all over Asia, Europe, South America, and North America! He was instantly labeled as the "Teenage Phenom".
